I do not know anything about american idol (I'm spanish actually) but I like Chris. It's a great singer and a great person too, at least is what he seems ^_^U
All in all it was probably better for his career, than to get locked into an Idol contract. He now has freedom to do it his way, and he has now been noticed by the public.
